Passage 1
Everyone knows that smoking is no good for health, but still a lot of people smoke, especially young people.Even some middle school students smoke a lot.At present, about 38% of the Chinese population smoke and millions of smokers die from smoking each year.
Why do so many people smoke? Some think that smoking is a pleasure, and some believe that they can refresh themselves by smoking.
In fact, smoking is a bad habit. It does great harm to health. It can cause many diseases, such as heart diseases and lung cancer, etc.
Smoking itself is also a kind of waste, which costs not only money but also time.Besides, many fires are often caused by careless smokers.Today, more and more people all over the world want to give up smoking. So, if you are not a smoker, don’t start.
Passage 2
A Better Understanding Between Parents and Children
Nowadays there is often a lack of understanding between parents and children.
They do not communicate with each other often.Children always think that their parents cannot understand them while their parents feel sorry that their children seldom listen to them. Why? Because they are of different age, experience and way of thinking and they have different likes and dislikes.Children enjoy taking part in all kinds of activities while parents prefer a peaceful life.Misunderstanding is another reason.
To solve this, parents should treat their children as friends rather than babies and children should respect their parents. If they both do their best, everything will become all right.
Passage 3
Air Travel and Train Travel
Air travel has two advantages over train travel.Firstly, it can save much time.We can fly from Yingchuan to Shanghai in just two hours, but by train it takes more than 34 hours.Secondly, air travel is more comfortable because the plane flies so smoothly that we can rest well during the trip, while the train is sometimes crowded and passengers have to sit for a long time, which makes us tired.
But train travel also has its own advantages. For example, traveling by train costs only 240 yuan from Yingchuan to Shanghai while traveling by air will cost us 1200 yuan.Besides, through the train’s window, we can enjoy the beautiful scenes outside the train.
So I think different people like different ways of traveling.
Passage 4
Dear Editor,
I live in a small village. There is an old temple with a history of hundreds of years. Some people in the village want to destroy it and build new factories and new houses in the place where the temple now stands. They say people need jobs and new houses to make life better.Other people think that the old temple is an important part of the history of the village. They say that the culture relics could never be recreated once they are destroyed. In my opinion, it would be much better to move the temple to another place and build a museum to protect it; we can built new factories to offer people new jobs and put up new houses for people to live in.In this way, we can create a better future without destroying the history.
Yours truly,
Li Ming
