Inappropriate Language

A group of nuns were traveling in a car when it had a flat tire。They got out and attempted to change it,but being rather unworldly,they had no idea how to go about it。Fortunately,a truck came along and the driver offered to change it for them。They gratefully accepted。

As the trucker jacked up the car,it slipped from the jack。

“Son-of-a-bitch!”he screamed。

“Sir,that is inappropriate language。”the eldest nun said,“We understand you’re upset,but must you use such language?”

“My apologies,Sister,”he replied,and tried again。It slipped again and nearly smashed his fingers。“Son-of-a-bitch!”he screamed。

“Please,sir,we would ask you again not to use such language,”the nun scolded,“If changing our tire is causing you to do so,perhaps it would be best if you didn’t help us。”

“I’m sorry,Sister,but I get so upset that it just comes out。”the trucker replied。

“Well,”said the nun,“say something else when you get upset。Say something like‘dear Lord,help me。’”

Once more,the trucker attempted to jack up the car and again it slipped。He began to blurt out“Son”but quickly caught himself and said,“Dear Lord,help me。”At that,the car miraculously rose into the air all by itself。

A:I know some things about writing a business letter。For example,if you start a letter with“Dear Sir”or“Dear Madam”,you should finish by writing“Yours Faithfully”。

B:That’s right and if you know the person’s name and you start by writing“Dear Mr Smith”or“Dear Mrs。Turner”,you should finish by writing“Yours Sincerely”。

A:Right。But I wanted to know some key phrases I could use。When I start a letter and I want to mention a letter that has been sent to me,can I say something like“With reference to your letter of July 15”?

B:Yes,or you could write“Further to your letter of July 15”,although perhaps that is not so common。If you have a question you could say“I am writing to inquire about”。

A:Could I say“I am writing to ask about”?

B:Sure,no problem,although,“inquire”sounds more formal。Then if you are sending something with the letter,you should say“Please find enclosed”and then say whatever it is you are enclosing。

A:Or just“I enclose”would be OK,wouldn’t it?Now when I want to finish the letter and want to say that I am willing to give more details I should write“If you require any further information”。

B:Yes or“Should you have any further questions”and then write“do not hesitate to contact me”。

A:How about“Don’t think twice to contact me”?

B:Yes,that’s OK,but,again,it’s a little less formal。Now your final phrase should be something like“I look forward to hearing from you soon。”

A:Ah yes or“I hope to hear from you soon。”

B:Yes。
